The PhotoGallery is proud to present one of its most visionary and expansive collective exhibitions to date — PORTRAITS BY AN ARTIST — a celebration of portrait photography through the lens.

Opening on 17 October at The PhotoGallery in Halmstad, the exhibition spans generations and genres — from the timeless elegance of classic photography to the bold expressions of today’s emerging voices. Each image is a window into a life, interpreted through the unique eye and artistry of the photographer.

At the heart of this exhibition is a special spotlight on Rodney Smith, the acclaimed American photographer whose meticulously composed, whimsical portraits have captivated audiences for decades. Known for working exclusively with analog film and natural light, Smith created images that are both technically precise and poetically imaginative. Drawing inspiration from art, literature, and the quiet absurdities of life, his photographs are instantly recognizable for their surreal charm, refined styling, and timeless sense of balance. With a background in theology and training under legendary photographer Walker Evans, Smith developed a singular visual language — elegant, humorous, and always deeply human.
